Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. More often than I (as well as many other crossword constructors, I’m certain) would like to admit, a neat construction looks neat because things just happened to fit. This is what happened to me, especially in the upper left. Those ten-letter entries at 23- and 52-Across weren’t meant to be, but they were a “what-the-heck” flier. Those were supposed to be each a 3- and 6-letter entry. It’s unusual behavior to go from a higher to lower word count, to intentionally make construction a bit more difficult, because of a what-the-heck moment, but it was a flier that worked just fine.
