Happy New Year to all! And look out, here’s a themed Club 72 grid! I’ve made both the PUZ and PDF versions available, of course, but I really do think it’s better hand-solved on the PDF. I’m not just saying that because I prefer hand-solving myself, either. I’ve ratcheted down the difficulty a little bit — a little bit — hard enough as that is to do for me. It’s an instinct for me at this point, one that I had to really fight, not to go the usual whole hog with clue difficulty.

Thanks so much to all who’ve left a tip! It’s much appreciated, believe me.

Thanks as always to the test solvers for their input.

As always, share this link! Pass it around! New puzzle on Tuesday!

  1. So I guess what we have here is a sort of meditation on the well-deserved “cancellation” of the departing Year from Hell (including one instance of ‘20 sinking on the western horizon), with a new year, ‘21, appearing like a rising sun on the eastern horizon. Is that what I was intended (and failed, given my sleep-deprived state) to see in this grid last night?

    (In any case … however belatedly … I like it! … 😜)

  2. Hmmm. I did this, with no errors, but … somehow … I don’t see how the seven X’s in the puzzle are treated as 20’s and one of the O’s is treated as a “21”. Am I just being stupid or does this refer to something outside my ken?

      1. Hmmm. I still don’t get it. Maybe it’ll make more sense to me in the morning. (It’s been a long day.)

(Also, in my original post, I should have said “six of the seven X’s”.)

  3. I managed ok on AcrossLite, but understand the benefit of doing this on paper. Thanks for doing your bit to help us get through last year. Very strongly appreciated. HNY to you and your fam.
